The French Reaction

This was entirely predictable, but is almost humorous in a way. Israel is invaded and some soldiers are killed and others are kidnapped. This is on one front. On this front (Lebenon) and another one (Gaza), rockets are lobbed into civilian populations from a territory handed over with no strings attached and no Israeliis were left behind. So how should Israel respond? Well, that response should be proportional.

"I find honestly -- as all Europeans do -- that the current reactions are totally disproportionate," he said in a live television interview on France's national Bastille Day. So spoke Jacques Chirac.

Who could have predicted that Israel would respond in a way that exceeded that which France would adopt? Some things never change.
